Cosmetic Breast Surgery in Chevy Chase, Maryland
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is the surgical procedure for enlargement of breast size. Breast augmentation is meant to improve a women’s body contour. These include women with naturally small breast and also those who have lost breast volume following pregnancy and nursing. This operation may help balance breast asymmetries, however, it is important to note that difference in the size, shape or orientation of the two breasts is considered normal and is actually the rule. While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, the surgery can not change the underlying defects in breast shape and form. If breast size and/or nipple position asymmetries are severe, additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary. Saline-filled or silicone gel implants may be implanted by several routes by an incision thru periareolar (around the areola), inframammary (lower breast folds), transaxillary (arm pits) as well as transumbilical (via the navel) or transabdominal (over the abdominal wall) during an abdominoplasty surgery. The implants can be placed submuscular [under the muscle (partial or full)], subfascial [under the fascia (the lining over the muscle)] or submammary [below the breast tissue and over the muscle and fascia].

Breast Lift

Breast Lift Surgery in Chevy Chase, Maryland
With age, skin loses its elasticity. In women, this plays a role in loss of the youthful appearance of breasts. Many factors such as pregnancy, breast feeding, weight gain and loss also play a role. Sagging breasts (ptosis) may be corrected by breast lift (mastopexy). Mastopexy may be combined with breast augmentation to improve the size or lost volume or may also be combined with breast reduction when the problem is excess volume or size. At the same time, nipple areolar complex can be reduced for a more youthful appearance. In cases of asymmetrical breasts, mastopexy can be performed to correct such problem. In sum, Mastopexy is performed to achieve higher breasts (lifted) with tighter breast envelope as well as improved breast symmetry, shape.
Who is a Candidate?
Women who have sagging breasts who desire improved shape are the typical candidates. Patients who are in good health must be cleared to be without underlying breast disease. The specific risks and suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation with your cosmetic surgeon. It is important to understand the extent of the scar needed to achieve the appropriate lift.
Procedure Description
Mastopexy operations are usually performed in an outpatient surgical center under general anesthesia in combination with local anesthesia. The areolar lift, also known as the Crescent lift, is a small a partial lift designed for minimally sagging (ptotic) breast. The incision is very small, generally encompassing the upper third of the areolar complex. The Peri-areolar lift, also known as doughnut lift, involves an incision around the entire areolar complex. The vertical lift, involves an incision around the entire areolar complex as well as an incision along the midline of the breast below the areolar complex. The inverted-T is the more comprehensive lift designed for the more severe ptotic breasts. In addition to the vertical incision, an incision along the inferior/ lower border of the breast is made. In some cases a small drain may be placed especially if the procedure is combined with a reduction. No matter which procedure is used, the main objective is to bring the nipple, areola, and the breast tissue to a more upright position.

Most women desire shapely breast. While full size breasts are desirable, excessively large breast causes physical complaints such as neck, shoulder and back pain, as well as excessively drooping breast (ptosis). Breast reduction, as the name implies, is designed to reduce the size of a breasts while at the same time improve the overall appearance or shape of the breast. In majority of cases a breast reduction is accompanied with a breast lift. Breast reduction is also used to correct asymmetry in breasts. To achieve smaller, shapelier breasts, skin, along with breast tissue and fat are removed. In a few cases liposuction may also be performed.
Who is a Candidate?
Women who are interested in breast reduction must have realistic expectations and be able tolerate the scar associated with the reduction. It is common that women who are candidates for this procedure have chronic neck, shoulder and back pain as well as chronic skin irritation along their bra straps and under the breast folds. Patients with extensive breast asymmetry are also candidates for this procedure. A full medical workup, especially for breast cancer is imperative. A pre operative mammogram is helpful.
Procedure Description
Breast reduction is generally performed in an accredited surgical facility or in the hospital under general anesthesia. The surgical incision and scar is similar to a more extensive breast lift. Various techniques are available which will determine the placement and size of your postoperative scars. Breast reductions are performed using surgical techniques that preserve some of the breast tissue and maintain a healthy blood supply to the breasts and the nipple areolar complex. The tissue removed is generally sent to pathology to rule out any underlying disease process. In some cases the procedure is accompanied with liposuction. Generally absorbable sutures are used for the closure of the skin. In most cases and depending on the amount of tissue removed, a drain is placed. The patient is placed in a soft compression braw.
Male Breast Reduction in Chevy Chase, Maryland
Gynecomastia is an excess male breast which generally occurs due to weight gain. Other factors such as hormones, genetics or a fatty tumor can result in gynecomastia. A comprehensive workup should be conducted before surgical treatment especially when a patient presents with a unilateral or one sided enlargement. In many cases, no cause is found. Men with this condition are generally extremely self conscious regarding their physique and overall posture. Treatment of gynecomastia involves liposuction alone or liposuction with direct excision. Scars are generally around the areola or hidden in the breast folds. Technique used depends on the size of the breast, the amount of fat vs actual breast tissue and the amount of sagging.
Who is a Candidate?
Healthy male patients with excess breast tissue or unwanted breast development who have no underlying breast disease are the usual candidates. Patients should have realistic expectations based on their condition and the procedure performed. Men who desire improved physical and aesthetic appearance must consult a cosmetic surgeon for their options.
Procedure Description
Male breast reduction using liposuction alone can generally be performed as an in-office procedure using oral sedation and local anesthesia. More extensive surgery requiring direct excision of breast tissue and/or excision of excess skin is generally conducted at an accredited surgical center under general anesthesia. Liposuction, after tumescent, is generally performed through a small incision at the areolar border. A larger incision is needed for excision of breast or mammary tissue, and skin resection is required to remove excess or drooping skin. If adjacent excess tissues are noted, then a more extensive resection may have to be performed to ensure an improved result. A drain placement is extremely rare in male breast reduction. A compression garment is always placed at the end of the procedure.
